SAVANNAH, GA (August 5, 2011): A Savannah man has been charged with stealing more than $47,500 from his employer.
Donald Wayne Gardner, 45, was arrested Thursday by Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Financial Crimes detectives for the thefts from Auto Intensive Care on Waters Avenue between 2008 and 2011. He has been charged with theft by taking and financial transaction card fraud, both felonies.
Star Cpl. R.J. Woodberry said an owner of the business discovered checks to companies he did not do business with and quizzed Gardner, the bookkeeper.
Gardner told the owners of the business he had written checks to pay for his personal gasoline and cell phone.
They also discovered he had opened an unauthorized credit card account in the business name and had been charging personal items to it, paying the bills with company checks.
The total loss was placed at $47,532.
