SAVANNAH, GA (September 23, 2013): Marine Patrol and Underwater Search and Recovery Units for the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department are using sonar, as they continue searching for a man seen by witnesses in the Savannah River Sunday morning.
Marine Patrol vessels equipped with Side Scan Sonar are probing the river for items or areas of interest during the recovery process.
According to witnesses, the incident began with a black male in his teens or early 20s sitting close to the water near River Street’s Waving Girl statue. A witness heard a splash, then reported seeing the male in the water asking for help. Witnesses were unable to get a nearby rope to him before he sank.
This in an ongoing SCMPD investigation with assistance from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Anyone with information on the identity of the male who was reportedly wearing a white shirt and no shoes is asked to call Emergency 911.
