SAVANNAH, GA (March 9, 2011): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police will begin closing some downtown streets at 5 p.m. Friday and will conduct a “soft closing” of others at 6 p.m. for the 18th Annual March Of Dimes Shamrock Run.
Some 1,900 runners are expected for the 5-K race which begins and ends at Jefferson and Congress streets. Registration begins at 3 p.m. in City Market.
Congress Street will be closed from Montgomery to Whitaker at 5 p.m. Jefferson Street will be closed from Broughton to Bryan from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. And Barnard Street from Broughton to Congress will close just prior to the 6 p.m. start.
Police will conduct the “soft closing”, meaning traffic will be allowed to cross the rest of the route as gaps appear between groups of runners, on the rest of the race course.
From Jefferson and Congress, the race travels South on Jefferson to York, East on York to Bull, South on Bull to Gaston, West on Gaston to Whitaker, South on Whitaker to Park, East on Park to Drayton, North on Drayton to Gaston, West on Gaston to Bull, North on Bull to Bryan, around Johnson Square, and West on Congress to the finish line at Jefferson.
A quarter-mile Kiddie Run for ages 10 and under will be held on Bryan Street at 5:40 p.m. Bryan Street will be closed between Congress and Montgomery for the anticipated 10-15 minutes of that run.
