SAVANNAH, GA ( February 7, 2010) Savannah- Chatham Metro Police are investigating an early morning one car accident. Just before 1:00 a.m., fire and EMS were requested at the intersection of Reynolds Street and Columbus Drive in reference to a vehicle accident.
The vehicle was in several pieces and the driver, Terry Bell, 29, had been ejected and was found lying on the grass.
Earlier in the evening an officer had observed the same vehicle at Delessps and Waters avenues. The officer observed the driver run the red light and activated his emergency equipment in an attempt to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle turned west on Columbus Drive and the officer believed the driver was coming to a stop. Then the driver accelerated at a high rate of speed so the officer deactivated his emergency equipment and opted to discontinued the stop for safety concerns.
Within a few blocks of the attempted traffic stop the vehicle, a Lincoln LX 2, went out of control and left the roadway. The driver is listed in critical condition at Memorial University Medical Center. A portion of Columbus Drive was closed due to the downed power line and wreckage from the accident. Traffic charges are pending. The investigation continues.
