SAVANNAH, GA (October 24, 2014) – The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department has finished cleaning up and repairing the home of retired Savannah Police Lt. John White.
Forty-six SCMPD officers and civilians volunteered their time over the past week cleaning the home, making repairs, organizing decades of memorabilia and installing new flooring. Today many of the volunteers stopped by Lt. White’s house to see the finished result and to wish him Happy Birthday. Lt. White will celebrate his 90th birthday this weekend.
Ret. Lt. White is the last surviving member of the “Original Nine” black police officers who joined the force in 1947. White served on the department for 38 years. Prior to joining the police department White served with the Montfort Point Marines, the first black Marine unit that integrated with the U.S. Marine Corps.
