SAVANNAH, GA (March 4, 2011): A 36-year-old Savannah man wanted by Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police has been arrested in Brooklyn, NY, for bank robbery.
Damien Lamar Gaffney was arrested Wednesday after a two-hour standoff in the robbery of the Chase Bank in Brooklyn. New York police have charged him with bank robbery and grand larceny auto.
Savannah police had filed warrants against him in November for false imprisonment, armed robbery and auto theft after his former girlfriend reported he had held her at knifepoint, robbed her of her cell phone and stolen her car.
Gina Wade of the 700 block of East Park Avenue called police Nov. 3 to report that Gaffney, who was living with her at the time, tied her hands behind her back, searched her apartment for her cell phone and left in her blue Toyota Camry. He had threatened to hurt her if she came out of her bedroom before he left.
Sgt. Laprentice Mayes of the SCMPD Robbery Division said he has begun extradition proceedings to return Gaffney to Savannah.
