SAVANNAH, GA (December 2, 2015): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police will host a youth forum at local schools and community centers with a goal of nurturing relationships between Savannah’s youth and SCMPD.
SCMPD’s Juvenile Officers created “Word from Our Youth” to dispel misconceptions about officers and encourage open and honest dialogue about law enforcement. This platform will identify misconceptions students have about officers and give the officers a chance to respond to them and work to resolve any discrepancies.
The forum will also give students a chance to express concerns within their communities and allow officers to address them.
The inaugural meeting will take place at Savannah Arts Academy on Friday, December 4, 2015 at 11 a.m.
A group of 20-25 students were selected by administrators at each school. The student participants will have the chance to interact with officers through meet and greet, forum style discussion and Q&A.
“The youth are an important piece to this puzzle,” says Cpl. Gregory Sublett. “Issues that are raised in our discussions in this forum will get the appropriate follow-up.”
Metro will focus the initiative with Beach High, DeRenne Middle, Ashtree Learning Center and Savannah Arts Academy in its first year. SCMPD is working with Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools to implement the program throughout the district.
