SAVANNAH, GA (July 18, 2011): A Savannah man who called police to report someone had been shooting at him and bumping his car with theirs today has been charged with stealing the car after police determined he made up the story to explain damages to the vehicle.
Sage Brown Jr., 19, of Melinda Drive has been charged with theft by taking after admitting stealing the car from Vaden Suzuki following a test drive last Wednesday.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were called to Truman Parkway just after midnight this morning where they found Brown and another man hiding on the roadway near a tan, 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The men told police they had been visiting a friend in the Sand Fly area when several people in a silver Toyota attempted to block them in by striking their car. The men said they were able to drive away but the Toyota pursued, firing at them and striking the Malibu.
Officers could find no signs of the car being struck by bullets or of any shots being fired in Sand Fly. But they did find indications that the Malibu had been driven through the median of the highway. They also found that it had been reported stolen last week after two men took it for a test drive and did not return all the keys.
In discussions with SCMPD robbery detectives, Brown admitted taking the vehicle.
