UPDATE: Local media coverage of these thefts resulted in the arrest of suspect, James Edward Smith, 35, of Savannah. Smith turned himself in to SCMPD on Tuesday. He is charged with seven counts of possession of tools for the commission of a crime and seven counts of theft by taking. He was transported to Chatham County Detention Center without incident. Additional charges are pending.

SAVANNAH, GA (October 26, 2015): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Southside Precinct detectives ask the public’s help in identifying the suspect who opened cash registers in at least six stores to steal or attempt to steal money.
The suspect targeted stores in east Savannah and the Southside between Sept. 20 and Oct. 20. In each case hand tools were used to pry registers open during business hours. The suspect stole money from Big Lots locations on Abercorn Street and on Victory Drive, Walmart Stores on Abercorn Street and on Montgomery Cross Road, Belk’s on the 7800 block of Abercorn Street and Dillard’s on the 14000 block of Abercorn Street.
The suspect is described as a black male, standing roughly 6-2 and weighing about 190 pounds.
