SAVANNAH, GA ( June 9, 2011) A new trend in air conditioner thefts in the Savannah area has the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department seeking the public’s assistance.
In the past three days two air conditioner unit thefts that may be related have been reported in churches and an office. Units have been reported stolen from the Skidaway Island Methodist Church and the Isle of Hope Baptist Church . The Boy Scouts of America office was targeted on Tuesday
Police are investigating the possibility that buildings that are usually unoccupied and in outlying areas and possibly churches specifically are being targeted.
Air conditioners are targeted for the copper inside and the rest of the metal is sold for scrap. Police are urging citizens to be proactive and secure their units and to be aware of unusual activity around buildings, houses and apartments that may be unoccupied at various times.
Police will be stepping up patrol on churches and building in outlying areas. Meanwhile, citizens who see suspicious activity are asked to call police as soon as possible.
