SAVANNAH, GA (April 15, 2016) – Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department officers are assisting the Tybee Island Police Department during the annual Orange Crush event April 15-16.
A designated group of Metro Officers will be assigned to the Orange Crush Beach Festivities. This designated group of Metro Officers will be sworn on Friday April 15, 2016 at the Tybee Island court house, enabling them to enforce laws within Tybee’s jurisdiction. SCMPD Officers will also be assigned to traffic duties along the Hwy 80 corridor. Officers will use Police Marked Motorcycles and All-Terrain Vehicles to monitor traffic along the Hwy 80 Corridor. A Command Post will be placed in the area of Bryan Woods Road near Hwy 80.
Police officials stress that visitors and residents of Tybee Island should anticipate traffic delays along Highway 80, especially from 5 p.m. through midnight each day.
“We received a lot of outside support from other agencies during our St. Patrick’s Day event, so this is a good opportunity to return the favor,” said Star Cpl Rick Davis, who is working SCMPD’s logistics for the Orange Crush event. “Metro is continuing support of nearby municipalities through traffic control and traffic enforcement. We want to ensure a fun and safe time for everyone at Orange Crush.”
An increased presence of Metro officers will patrol the areas of West Highway 80 at Grays Creek to the East end of Hwy 80 at San Marcos Drive near Estill Hammock. If necessary, drivers may be detoured from Highway 80 to the Island Expressway to alleviate traffic congestion.
