SAVANNAH, GA (September 11, 2015): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department collaborated with Savannah-Chatham County Public School System Police in investigating a suspicious package found in a vehicle parked outside of Haven Elementary School this morning.

The suspicious vehicle was first observed at about 6:30 a.m. by a member of the school’s custodial staff. Roughly two hours later, with student drop-offs underway, school administrators reported the unclaimed vehicle to police. Approximately 400 students were evacuated from the school and bused to a nearby community center.

At the Board of Education’s request, Metro’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team arrived to search the suspicious vehicle and its contents. EOD detected no threat to public safety. Students were transported back to the school at about 12:15 p.m.

School Board Police, SCMPD’s EOD team, Traffic Unit and patrol officers responded to the scene. Also present were the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office’s Explosive Detector Dogs, Savannah Fire, CEMA and SCCPSS administrators.
