SAVANNAH, GA (November 20, 2013): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Canine Officer “Toro” was injured while in pursuit of a man suspected in a west Savannah burglary Tuesday.
At about 1:45 p.m. Metro responded to reports of a trespasser in the backyard of a residence on the first block of Holiday Circle. The trespasser was seen attempting to break in through the a sliding glass door using a pool cue.
The suspect fled once Metro arrived resulting in a foot chase involving several officers, K-9 Toro and his handler. Still armed with the pool cue, the man struck and injured Toro, who managed to aid in catching and arresting the suspect.
The suspect is identified as 26-year-old William McKenzie of Jesup, GA. Further investigation revealed that McKenzie is a suspect in the burglary of another house on the first block of Holiday Circle which also took place Tuesday.
McKenzie is charged with two counts of burglary, obstruction, injury to a police dog, terroristic threats and acts, and simple assault.
