SAVANNAH, GA (February 27, 2015) Traffic officers are investigating a mishap this morning in which a 14-year-old boy received serious injuries when he was run over by a car.
Marquad Smith of the 5500 block of Montgomery Street was transported to Memorial University Medical Center after the 7:33 a.m. incident on Montgomery Street at Birchfield Drive.
Marquad was crossing Birchfield on his way to a school bus stop when he was struck by a car driven by William Buck, 48, of the 200 block of Birchfield Drive. His sister Myesha Smith, 17, also was struck but not injured.
Investigators with the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department reported Buck stopped at the intersection of Montgomery beside another car and was attempting to turn right when he felt his car hit something and stopped. He saw the victim’s sister beside the car and attempted to back up; not realizing the car was atop the 14-year-old.
Passing citizens, including CWO4 David Longoria, two other soldiers on their way to nearby Hunter Army Air Field and two others, lifted the car off the victim.
MAIT continues to investigate the incident.
