UPDATE (March 4, 2021): Charles Bryant, 52, of Savannah, has been identified as the deceased passenger.
SAVANNAH, GA (March 3, 2021) – Savannah Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating a single vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Savannah man today.
According to a preliminary investigation, Karl Whatley, 54, was driving a Toyota Camry north on Martin Luther King Boulevard when he lost control and struck a light pole and tree near W. Park Avenue. Whatley sustained minor injuries and was uncooperative with police and emergency personnel. Evidence of drug use was located in the vehicle.
A passenger, whose identity will be released pending notification of next of kin, was transported to Memorial Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.
Charges in the investigation are pending. An initial investigation determined DUI and failure to maintain lane as the causes of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
