SAVANNAH, GA (September 22, 2011): A robbery suspect arrested by federal marshals this week for the robbery of a Savannah convenience store in August, has been identified as the gunman who shot another man in Sunset Park three days later.
Charles Christopher Johnson, 18, was arrested by marshals for the Aug. 26 robbery of the Parkers Convenience Store on Beech Street.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police violent crimes detectives said he also shot Christopher Washington, 19, near Sunset Park on Sunset Boulevard Aug. 29. Washington was shot in the foot, ran to Martha Street and was taken by private automobile to a hospital. He since has been released from the hospital.
Johnson had used a gun to rob the Parkers of cash from the register and safe as well as two cartons of cigarettes.
Johnson later was beaten and robbed of items he had purchased and the remaining cash. Police are trying to determine if that robbery led to the shooting in the park.
Each of the men said the other shot at him first. Neither wishes to press charges against the other. Detectives are conferring with the Chatham County District Attorney’s Office to determine if any charges will be filed against either for the shooting.
Police also are continuing to investigate the robbery and shooting as well as other incidents that may have included either of the men.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crimestoppers at (912) 234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637). In the body type, include “CStop2020” plus the tip. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
