SAVANNAH, GA (August 18, 2011): Savannah police are taking measures to stem the usual crime increases that accompany the weekend before school starts with an informational and intensive patrol operation this weekend.
“Operation Back to School Blues” will be conducted in three shopping center parking lots by Islands Precinct officers of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department on Friday from 5-10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Islands Precinct Crime Suppression Unit Sgt. Chris Hinson said officers will be out in force looking for offenses and informing shoppers on how to protect themselves in the Victory Square and McAlpine Square Shopping Centers on Victory Drive and in the Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club Shopping Center on Montgomery Crossroads.
“This is a time when traditionally crime increases as students get ready to go back to school,” said Hinson. “We have a lot of shoplifting reports, thefts from vehicles, robberies and pan handling. We will be trying to reach out to shoppers and merchants alike to help advise them on how to protect themselves while we keep sharp eyes out for suspects in action.”
The SCMPD Mobile Command Post will be stationed in Victory Square and officers will be on foot patrol and bicycles patrolling the lots. The public is invited to stop by and tour the command post, talk to officers and pick up informational fliers.
