SAVANNAH, GA (September 17, 2010): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police are investigating a drowning that occurred earlier this evening at Lake Mayer.
At 5:44 p.m., Savannah Chatham Metro Police responded to the report of a drowning at Lake Mayer. The victim, 20-year-old William Harris Small III, was with his family near the lake when their ball rolled into the water. Mr. Small went into the water to retrieve the ball and lost his footing. Witnesses observed Mr. Small in the water, in distress. One man jumped in and attempted to save him but was unsuccessful.
South Side EMS arrived on the scene and attempted to free dive to rescue Mr.Small. Savannah Fire Water Recovery Unit also responded and pulled Mr.Small from the water just after 6:00 p.m. EMS transported him to Memorial Health University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
