SAVANNAH, GA (October 23, 2017) – Less than 48 hours after the shooting occurred, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Violent Crimes ivestigators have arrested a suspect responsible for the shooting death of a 15-year-old male.
At about 10:50 p.m. on October 21, officers responded to McDonald’s in the 13100 block of Abercorn Street and found George Akins Jr., 15, suffering from life-threatening injuries. A second 15-year-old male was also injured in the shooting, and was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Akins succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Through their diligent efforts over the past two days, investigators determined a verbal altercation took place between two groups of individuals on October 21. Those groups were then involved in a confrontation outside McDonald’s that led to the shooting.
Detectives identified Jeffery Burton, 16, as a suspect in Akins’s death. Burton was arrested on October 23 and charged with murder. Additional charges are forthcoming.
