SAVANNAH, GA (January 26, 2016): The registration process is underway for Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s next Citizens Police Academy.
The 13-week program allows residents to interact with members of the police department and the criminal justice community. Participants will learn the unique job functions of officers representing each Metro unit and the various local agencies with whom they collaborate. When possible, the academy includes tours of the Chatham County Jail, 911 Communication Center, firearm and tactical training, traffic stop role playing exercises and a ride-along with patrol officers.
Graduates will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible to apply to the Volunteers in Policing Program in support of SCMPD.
Applications are available at all SCMPD precincts and online at https://savannahpd.org. A $10 registration fee applies and may be paid by check or money order. Applicants must be at least 18-years-old and able to pass a criminal background check. The last day to return signed and notarized applications to police headquarters at 201 Habersham Street, is Friday, Feb. 12. Early application submittal is encouraged, as seating is limited.
Classes meet on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at SCMPD Headquarters in the Squad Room. The Academy begins on Thursday, Feb. 18.
