SUSPECT TURNED HIMSELF IN FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 16, 2011
SAVANNAH, GA ( September 15, 2011) Police are searching for a man who attacked another with a hammer during an attempted robbery in Franklin Square.
On September 08, just after 5p.m., an officer was approached by a man claiming he had just been attacked. He told the officer he was walking east on Bryan Street from his job as a parking attendant at a church parking lot located on the corner of Bryan Street and MLK Blvd, when the attack occured. He went on to tell the officer that the suspect, a black male, in his 50s, wearing a white bucket hat, a red and white striped polo shirt, and glasses, hit him in the back with a hammer and demanded money.
The victim, in his 60s, ran from the suspect without giving him any money or personal belongings. The suspect was later identified as Joseph Bennett Jr., 56. Bennett has had ties to Yamacraw and the Franklin Square/Montgomery and Bryan area; however he is currently homeless and has allegedly been seen further east since the incident, possibly in the area Bull and 40th streets and the Waters Avenue area. BENNETT has a warrant for his arrest for Aggravated Assault with the Intent to Rob.
