SAVANNAH,GA ( May 21, 2012) An 18-year-old Savannah man has been charged with a convenience store robbery and is being questioned about a second crime after a witness helped police identify him Sunday.
Kwame Hampton who is listed as homeless was taken into custody by a Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Southside Precinct officer responding to the robbery of the Parker’s Convenience Store on the 200 block of Montgomery Crossroads.
Police were called to the store about 3 p.m. Sunday after a clerk reported a man who had entered and left the store several times had returned with a hooded shirt over his head and a weapon in his hand and robbed her of money.
He then left, fleeing south on Atwood Drive when a bystander began following him. The bystander flagged down a responding officer and pointed the suspect out, explaining that he had taken off the jacket he wore in the robbery. A few minutes later the same bystander directed police to an apartment where he was taken into custody.
Hampton was charged with armed robbery.
He also has been identified as a suspect in the April 27 robbery of a man at Timberland Apartments on the 10000 block of Abercorn Street.
In that case police were called to a fight in progress and learned that several men had beaten and robbed another man as he walked through the apartments. The man said he was lured into a stairway opening and jumped by three men.
Police have identified Hampton as one of the men accompanying him.
