SAVANNAH, GA (March 5, 2012): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police got their man but not before he crashed the stolen car he was driving into a tree on Wilmington Island this morning.
Javell Demetrius Wright, 20, of a Pinetree Road address had sped away from a traffic stop on East Victory Drive. He reached speeds in excess of 120 MPH before he missed a curve and struck a tree on the 7100 block of Johnny Mercer Boulevard about 1:30 a.m.
The 2012 Ford Fusion he was driving had been reported stolen about 11 p.m. on Texas Avenue from a 30-year-old woman who said she was texting on her cell phone when two masked men approached. They forced her out of the car at gunpoint, and sped away in it, taking her purse with them.
Islands Precinct patrol officers spotted the car at Whatley Street and Victory Drive and attempted to stop it before it sped away and crashed. Wright ran from the scene and was pursued on foot by officers who caught and arrested him.
He has been charged with theft by receiving stolen property, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, fleeing to elude a police officer, driving with a suspended drivers license, reckless driving, driving too fast for conditions and failure to stop at a stop sign.
