SAVANNAH, GA (March 31, 2011): A 25-year-old man living in Savannah has been charged with a felony and a misdemeanor after crashing his father’s vehicle on Hutchinson Island and then reporting it stolen.
John Thomas Kennedy was charged with false statements and writings, a felony, and false report of a crime after he called police to a Downtown Savannah location about 1:15 a.m. March 23 to report the Acura he was driving had been stolen from the 300 block of Congress Street. He reported the keys to it could not be located. The car is registered to his father in Aiken, SC.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police soon found the car on Grand Prize of America Boulevard on Hutchinson Island with damage to the side and front end and had it towed in for processing. However, when the forensics technician arrived to process the car, he was advised that Kennedy had been there earlier, told employees at the lot it no longer needed to be fingerprinted, and used the keys to gain entry.
Police determined Kennedy had wrecked the car, obtained a ride back Downtown in a taxi and reported it stolen as a cover.
