SAVANNAH, GA (August 31, 2015): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Accident Investigations Team responded to the scenes of two weekend vehicle accidents.
The first was a single-vehicle accident on Saturday at 11:18 p.m. Feldon Williams, 57, was approaching mile marker 163 on westbound Interstate 16 at a high rate of speed. He lost control of the 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera while changing lanes, causing the vehicle to spin into a guardrail. The vehicle went airborne before flipping over the guardrail and down an embankment, where it caught fire. Southside Fire and EMS extinguished the blaze. Williams was transported to Memorial University Medical Center in critical condition.
MAIT responded to another accident on Sunday at approximately 5:36 p.m. on Green Island Road and Diamond Causeway. Catherine Tatum Thomas, 17, was driving north on Green Island Road in a Honda CRV. She failed to stop at a stop sign before approaching Diamond Causeway. Robert Flynn, 68, was traveling west on Landings Way toward Diamond Causeway in a Nissan Altima. His wife Beverly Flynn, 64, was in the front passenger seat. Flynn stopped at the stop sign before proceeding onto Diamond Causeway, but was struck by the Honda CRV. The impact caused both vehicles to travel off of the roadway onto the northeast corner of the intersection. Flynn died at the scene. His wife and Thomas were transported to MUMC with non-life threatening injuries.
Both cases remain under investigation by MAIT.
