SAVANNAH, GA (February 11, 2013): Six dozen stuffed Teddy bears are getting a second chance to brighten a struggling child’s life thanks to a donation by an Oglethorpe Mall jewelry store.
Customers of Kay Jewelers purchased the bears in a fundraiser over the Christmas holidays to be donated to the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department to help children in distress.
The bears are placed with Metro police officers who frequently come into contact with children who can be overlooked when their families are facing stressful situations. The bears are used by the officers to comfort children on the scene.
Karen Campbell, manager of the mall store, said Kay Jewelers has been selling the bears for seven years to raise contributions to St. Jude’s Children’s Cancer Hospital in Memphis, TN. To date the promotion has collected $14 million for the not-for-profit hospital.
This is the third year the store has donated bears to SCMPD.
