SAVANNAH, GA (April 26, 2016): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police arrested and charged Joe Palmer, 67, with cruelty to children and felony neglect on April 26, after finding his 6-month-old great-grandson alone in his vehicle, as Palmer gathered items at an auto parts salvage yard.
At about 12:30 p.m. Central Precinct Patrol officers responded to the Cash and Carry parking lot on the 500 block of Staley Avenue. This, after a bystander reported a seeing a crying infant in the backseat of a parked car with the window’s down approximately one inch. Officers arrived keeping watch over the infant as the bystander obtained an unlocking tool to gain entry to the car.
One Metro officer with experience with as a paramedic immediately took measures to cool the baby’s body temperature. EMS workers continued these measures upon arrival. The infant was transported by ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
Police made contact with Palmer at the scene, identifying him as the owner of the vehicle. Preliminary investigation revealed that the infant may have been left in the car for approximately one hour and 15 minutes.
Palmer was arrested at the scene without incident. The child’s mother was notified.
