SAVANNAH, GA ( May 22, 2012 ) Savannah-Chatham Metro Animal Control has charged Stephanie Smith ( formally Bennett) and her mother Mary Stalvey this afternoon after the conclusion of their investigation.
It all started Thursday May 17, after three cats and one dog were found crated, abandoned and deceased inside a storage unit.
The manager of the facility, Jim Buckley, went into the unit to do an inventory for auction. The unit is scheduled to have its contents sold due to non-payment. He discovered the animals and called police.
Animal Control Officers( ACO) responded and removed the animals. Their state of decomposition led them to believe the animals had been dead for months.
Stephanie Smith, 26, and Mary Stalvey,51, were charged this afternoon with city ordinance citations of: (4) counts of animal neglect, (4) counts of animal cruelty, and (4) counts of abandonment of animals.
