SAVANNAH, GA (September 15, 2015): A tip from an observant citizen resulted in a burglary suspect’s arrest on the 600 block of Whippoorwill Road late Saturday night.
Patrol officers of Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Islands Precinct responded to reports of a suspicious pick-up truck parked outside of a Whippoorwill Road residence. No vehicle fitting the description was found, but responding officers heard a loud noise from one of the windows. A Metro K-9 led officers to shrubbery where James Elder, 54, was hiding. Elder was later arrested and charged with burglary and possession of tools for the commission of a crime after an examination of in the residence showed signs of forced entry and disheveled property.
Moments later, additional citizens directed a Metro officer near the scene to Woodpecker Lane. A pick-up truck unfamiliar to neighbors and matching the description given on Whippoorwill Road was parked there.
Soon after, another Metro officer observed the 2010 Toyota Tacoma linked to the burglaries driving on Walthour Road. The truck’s driver disregarded the officer’s signal to stop, prompting the officer to follow the vehicle until the driver exited and fled at a dead end on Boxwood Drive.
The driver of the pick-up truck remains at large.
