SAVANNAH, GA (September 17, 2012) The Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department is investigating an accident that left two 9-year-old girls injured, one critically.
Brianna Quarterman was listed in crtical condition and Aaliyah Washington was in good condition after the 3:27 p.m. accident. The two Hodge Elementary School students were walking in front of Beech High School on Hopkins Street at West 47th Street when they were struck by a car.
A17-year-old Beech High School student drove a 2008 Kia Optima from the school with her mother when she accelerated and oversteered onto the west side of Hopkins Street toward a large oak tree. In an attempt to miss the tree, the car struck the two pedestrians, jumped a curb and continued across the front lawn of the high school before striking a car in the parking lot.
Both girls were transported to Memorial University Medical Center by Southside Emergency Medical Services.
MAIT officers continue to investigate the accident.
