SAVANNAH, GA (February 12, 2013): The Animal Control Division of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department is pushing animal adoptions before renovation begins on its dog kennels.
The Department of Agriculture ordered the renovation to address seams in concrete slabs that affect their cleaning efforts in most of the dog kennels in the Animal Control center.
The renovation work will decrease room for dogs an entire wing at a time. Each of the three wings will undergo this process in a four- to six-week period, reducing the center’s holding capacity by a third. Animal Control’s goal is to adopt or have rescue organizations take animals to avoid euthanasia. Construction begins Feb. 25.
Currently the center holds 102 dogs and puppies in its 116 dog kennels and currently has 70 cats and kittens. The center is required to hold animals at least five days before euthanizing, but staff members routinely hold animals as long as possible to allow for adoption.
The public can view and adopt animals at the center at 7211 Sallie Mood Drive between 1 and 5 p.m. every day. Licensed Rescue groups will have access to the kennels beginning at noon each day.
Animal Control staff has reached out to veterinarians and pet stores in the area with posters to encourage adoption. Anyone with questions can call the center at (912) 351-6750.
