SAVANNAH – The Savannah Police Department is investigating a Dec. 10 aggravated assault near W. Walburg St. and Whitaker St. that left an adult female with chemical burns to her skin.
Officers responded to the scene at around 8:15 p.m. based on a 911 call. First responders located and treated the victim on scene before transferring her to Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
After an initial investigation it is believed that an adult male approached and attacked the victim with a liquid chemical. The attacker was not known to the victim.
“Our first priority is the well-being of the victim, and our detectives are working around the clock to determine exactly what happened,” said Lenny B. Gunther, Savannah Police Chief. “While this was a disturbing incident, we want to reassure our community that we are actively investigating and have increased patrols in our parks out of an abundance of caution.”
Based on the initial investigation, detectives believe an adult male approached and attacked the victim with a liquid chemical. The attacker was not known to the victim.
“We’re asking anyone who was in Forsyth Park last night, especially those who were taking photos or video, to please come forward,” Gunther said. “Even a small detail may help us piece together what occurred. Our community is one of our strongest partners in keeping Savannah safe.”
Gunther added, “We understand that incidents like this can be unsettling, but we want to be clear: we are fully engaged, actively investigating, and have increased our presence in parks as a precautionary measure. Right now, we have no evidence that the public faces an ongoing threat.”
