SAVANNAH, GA (January 3, 2013): Seven occupants were transported for treatment today when a car travelling the wrong way on Interstate 95 collided with an SUV carrying five passengers.
Virgil Hicks, 83, and Mary Hicks of Statesboro, as well as Sarah Miller, 41, Vachel Miller, 43, Galen Miller, 10, Caspian Miller, 6, and Sidra Miller, 8, all of Boone, NC, were transported to Memorial University Medical Center after the 11:54 a.m. crash.
Virgil Hicks was listed in critical condition. Galen Miller was listed in serious condition. Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Hicks were listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. The others were treated for injuries and released.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Major Accident investigation Team officers said Virgil Hicks was operating a 2007 Buick Lucerne, traveling south bound in the emergency lane of northbound Interstate 95 and attempted to turn left across traffic onto the exit ramp.
A Honda Pilot driven northbound by Mrs. Miller and the Buick collided at the beginning of the ramp.
The intersection and portions of I-95 were closed for several hours for the investigation and clean up.
