SAVANNAH, GA (December 21, 2012) One victim is dead and two others have been hospitalized after three separate incidents in which pedestrians were struck by vehicles Thursday night.
John Robertson, 53, of the 10000 block of Abercorn Street was declared dead at Memorial University Medical Center after he was struck by a pickup truck at Abercorn and Wilshire Boulevard about 8:30 p.m.
Okeemi Brown, 24, who is homeless, was listed in serious but stable after he was struck by a car at West Bay and Scarborough streets about three hours earlier.
Alfreda Wright, 51, of the 2500 block of East Derenne Avenue was transported for treatment after she was struck by a vehicle as she was walking westbound on the side of West Gwinnett Street near the U.S. 17 overpass about 10:10 p.m.
The vehicle, described as an older model car, briefly stopped and then sped away. Witnesses alerted police and led them to the victim.
Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) officers from the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department said Robertson was crossing Abercorn against the light when he was struck by a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Joan Mathews, 39, of Idaho.
About 5:20 p.m., Brown was injured when he was struck by a 1999 Toyota Corolla driven by Tyree Brown, 18, of Salt Landing Circle. The two men are not related. Tyree Brown was driving eastbound on West Bay Street when Okeemi Brown started crossing the street, stopped midway and walked in front of the Corolla.
MAIT officers continue to investigate all three accidents. Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at (912) 234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637). Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
