SAVANNAH, GA (February 5, 2013): Department members are being sought to form a team in the memory of the late S. Cpl. Tony Lopez to participate in a 5-K run/walk to raise money for cancer screenings.
Tony retired in 2012 after 27 years in the department, many of them as the Crime Prevention Officer in the Central Precinct. During that time he became a well-recognized face of the precinct and the department because of his good nature, friendly personality and job dedication. He died in August from complications with the cancer that forced his retirement.
The SCMPD team will be recognized for its participation in honor of S. Cpl. Lopez at the event.
The “Get Your Rear in Gear Savannah 5K” road race is scheduled for March 2 to raise money for colon cancer screening for the uninsured residents of the area. Participants pay a $25 entry fee.
The event begins at 8:15 a.m. Saturday March 2 at 225 Candler Drive in front of the Nancy N. & J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion across from Candler Hospital. A free Fun Run for children age 10 under begins at 8 a.m.
Anyone interested in joining the team and running in the race is asked to contact Lt. Deborah Robinson, Chief Lovett’s adjutant, at drobinson@savannahga.gov. She will handle the registration formalities.
