SAVANNAH, GA (May 19, 2016): Thirty-four new officers were officially welcomed into the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department family this afternoon at a Badge Pinning Ceremony held at the Savannah Civic Center.
The four women and 30 men were sworn in by the City of Savannah Clerk of Council and will report to their prospective precincts on Friday. They just completed 11 weeks of training at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center followed by eight weeks of training at the SCMPD Patrol School.
Chief of Police Joseph H. Lumpkin, Sr. thanked the officers for stepping forward and becoming police officers. He also thanked the families. Their support allows these officers to improve public safety in our community. “You will each be a leader in this community,” Chief Lumpkin said, “You will be called upon to effect change in many situations.”
Assistant Chief Julie Tolbert urged them to always treat citizens with respect. “Think about how you would want a police officer to treat a member of your family. That’s how you should the people you serve and protect,” she said.
