SAVANNAH, GA (July 5, 2017) – Presently, SCMPD is continuing the investigation of two early morning hour shootings. SCMPD had an increased officer presence in the downtown area, working the festival. Officers heard gun shots at 12:13 a.m. near the intersection of Jefferson Street and West St. Julian Street. Two subjects sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and one subject is in critical but stable condition.
Officers broadcast a vehicle description of the perpetrator’s vehicle. That vehicle crashed at the intersection of Bay Street and Barnard Street, after a police pursuit. As a result of the crash, one pedestrian was killed and five other pedestrians sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Two people in the perpetrator’s car were killed in the crash.
For transparency purposes, the Georgia State Patrol was requested to investigate the crash. SCMPD has one person in custody for the shooting that occurred at Jefferson and West St. Julian Street, as well as for the vehicle crash at Bay and Barnard. That individual will be charged with three counts of felony murder, and other related charges.
Officer overheard a second shooting, which occurred at 12:27 a.m., near the intersection of Jefferson Street and Broughton Street. One person sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators are actively investigating these violent crimes, and are continuing to interview witnesses of both shootings.
Chief Lumpkin will be holding a news conference this afternoon. Right now, the Chief is reviewing the reports and video involved in last night’s incident.
