SAVANNAH, GA (March 22, 2022) – Savannah Police Department wrapped up its four-day St. Patrick’s Day operations with 17 arrests in the operation zone.
“We were extremely pleased with results of the 2022 celebration,” Chief Roy Minter said. “The majority of the visitors were well behaved and enjoyed themselves without excessive over-indulgence or illegal activity. We hope to continue to see this trend with future crowds. SPD officers also worked long hours managing large crowds and in inclement weather. I am extremely proud of the professionalism of the men and women of SPD during this event.”
Prior to the start of the parade on March 17, SPD towed 42 vehicles parked in the parade route.
During the parade, there was only one arrest. The arrest, made by at Georgia State Patrol trooper, was for public drunkenness.
An additional 16 arrests were made in the operation zone during the rest of the weekend. The most common charge was obstruction, which accounted for eight of the arrests. Three arrests were made for public drunkenness (not including the parade arrest) There were no arrests made in the expanded To-Go Cup Zone.
In addition to the operation zone arrests, the SPD Traffic Unit wrote 122 citations and made 17 DUI arrests.
In comparison, there were 33 arrests in 2019, 20 in 2018, and 54 in 2017. Those totals do not include arrests made by the SPD Traffic Unit.
The Alcohol Beverage Compliance (ABC) Unit conducted checks at 35 businesses from March 17-19. Of those, 12 failed the operation. The managers or licensees were notified of the alcohol sold, that the buyer was underage, if the offender checked for ID, how the alcohol was served/sold/given to the buyer, and the actions taken by law enforcement after identifying the violation. Businesses that passed will receive a congratulatory letter.
