SAVANNAH, GA (February 22, 2021) – An SPD officer quickly jumped into action after witnessing a cutting early Feb. 20 outside a bar on Congress Street, arresting the suspect and stopping an assault.
Around 2 a.m. the officer was responding to a non-related call in the 100 block of Congress Street when he heard a commotion and saw the male subject on top of the male victim, in the act of cutting him with a knife. The officer quickly disarmed the suspect and placed him under arrest. The victim, 41, of Statesboro, was transported to a hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Jacques Didlaire, 40, of Opa Locka, Fla., was booked into the Chatham County jail on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, use of a knife during the commission of a crime, and terroristic threats.
“The officer’s actions were brave and heroic,” Chief Roy Minter said. “The officer jumped into action and arrested the subject, but he also ultimately saved the victim’s life.”
An investigation revealed the incident between the two men started inside a business on Congress Street and continued outdoors, where it resulted in an aggravated assault.
Didlaire was charged with terroristic threats for threats of violence against police officers.
The incident remains under investigation.
