MEDIA ADVISORY
For Immediate Release
SAVANNAH, GA (October 19, 2010): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police have an increased presence downtown.
Segway of Savannah has loaned two Segways to the department to try out, so far they have been very successful. Captain Mike Wilkins says “having the officers on the Segways increases their visibility, and the public’s awareness of them.”
The feedback has been very positive; the general public and even business owners enjoy having the very visible police presence. The officers ride the Segways in two shifts, 16 hours a day. They mainly ride in the Historic district, River Street, south to Park Avenue and E. Broad Street to Martin Luther King Blvd.
The officers are acting in a proactive role but will respond if needed.
