SAVANNAH – Traffic will be rerouted on several downtown Savannah streets in preparation for the Savannah Waterfront Independence Day event, set to begin on Saturday, July 4th at 5:00 p.m.
The length of River Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the East Broad Ramp will be closed to all vehicular traffic on July 4th at 6:00 p.m. and will reopen at approximately 11:00 p.m. The Barnard Ramp, Bull Ramp and Drayton Ramp will also be closed to traffic during this time.
Several streets in the Ellis Square area will be closed to all vehicular traffic at 10:00 p.m. on July 4th and will open at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 5th. There will be closures on St. Julian Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Montgomery Street (West of Franklin Square), Montgomery Street from Broughton Street to Bryan Street, Jefferson Street from Broughton Street to Bryan Street, Barnard Street from Broughton Street to Bryan Street, and Congress Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Whitaker Street.
This event will impact downtown traffic flow, as well as residential and visitor parking. The Ellis Square/Barnard Street exit of the Whitaker Street Garage will be closed for the same hours as the Ellis Square area street closures.
No parking zones will be marked prior to the event. Beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3rd through 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 5th, the following streets will be designated as no parking zones: Congress Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Bull Street, St. Julian Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Montgomery Street, and St. Julian Street from Whitaker Street to Bull Street. Vehicles remaining in no parking zones after the indicated times will be towed at the owner’s expense.
From 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4th to 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 5th, an area-specific rideshare geofence will be set up in two zones. The “Green Zone” will be located at Indian Street and McGuire Street, while the ‘Purple Zone” will be set up at the south end of Johnson Square.
SPD asks drivers to plan routes accordingly and to exercise caution and patience during this event.
