SAVANNAH, GA (January 4, 2011): A 32-year-old Savannah man is being charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after he entered a West Bay Street church with a gun and locked himself in a room Tuesday.
Terrence Dillard was charged after he was taken by officers to Memorial Health Medical Center for evaluation about 6:45 p.m. He had locked himself in a room in the United House of Prayer for All People for almost an hour before walking out and surrendering. Patrol officers and members of the SCMPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team had closed off Bay Street and the area around the church just before 6 p.m.
The church at 2301 West Bay St. was evacuated and neighbors were held back as a precautionary measure when police were told the man had been seen with a weapon. A weapon was found in the church after he was taken into custody.
