SAVANNAH, GA (August 21, 2013): A manhunt by the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department throughout Whitemarsh Island this morning resulted in the arrest of a man wanted in Port Wentworth for aggravated child molestation.
At about 12:14 p.m. an SCMPD K-9 officer and Special Victims sergeant spotted and arrested James Dover behind a residence located about 100 yards from the entrance to the Long Point subdivision. A tip alerted investigators on Dover’s presence in the Viera at Whitemarsh Apartment complex. Before units arrived, Dover dashed into a wooded area just west of the apartment complex on Johnny Mercer Boulevard, until he was no longer visible.
Three nearby schools were temporarily placed on lockdown, as Metro investigators considered Dover dangerous.
The search for Dover required collaborative efforts by Metro’s Aviation, K-9, Special Victims and Crime Suppression Units, along with the SWAT Team, Marine Patrol Island’s Precinct patrol officers and detectives, Campus Police, Thunderbolt Police, and the US Marshal Service.
