SAVANNAH, GA (January 7, 2012): Police Chief Willie Lovett wasted little time in taking steps to assure the consistent decrease in crimes continued through 2013 by reassigning eight members of his command staff beginning today.
Final figures for 2012 are in the annual process of confirmation before being announced this week but they are expected to show a marked improvement over 2011.
“I am proud of the efforts and the effectiveness our entire department presented in 2012 and I thank all who contributed,” Lovett said. “But each year brings new challenges and we must adjust our efforts to meet those challenges. I have every reason to believe that these reassignments will help put each member of the command staff in position to best serve this community at this time.”
Crime numbers have consistently fallen each year since Lovett took command of the department in 2010 with the exception of 2011 when they inched above the department’s best year in history in 2010. 2012 figures are on target to be improved over 2010.
Major Julie Tolbert has been reassigned from Patrol North to commander of Special Operations.
Major James Barnwell has been reassigned from commander of the communications unit to commander of Patrol North.
A marked change will be the addition of the new street drug unit approved by Savannah Mayor-Council recently. Capt. Cedric Phillips who has served as supervisor over all precincts as afternoon captain since his promotion in 2012 has been assigned command of that unit.
Lt. John Best, shift commander in the Central Precinct, is being promoted to captain and was assigned command of the Islands Precinct.
