SAVANNAH, GA ( June 27, 2011) A suspect that was apprehended near an attempted armed robbery is being charged with the crime this afternoon. .
Sunday 9:30 p.m., officers were called to the 500 Block of E. Oglethorpe in reference to a shooting. The victim told police he was walking to get something to eat when he was approached from behind by a man.
He said the suspect demanded money and brandished a handgun. That’s when he ran. A shot rang out, and he thought he had been grazed. He kept running until he found an employee from Screaming Mimi’s Pizzeria and they called police.
Officers observed a subject fitting the description in the area and gave chase. Forensics and K-9 responded. An area canvass was conducted where the suspect ran. A gun and a shell casing were recovered. The suspect Richard HALSTON, 22, had a magazine and bullets on him. He was apprehended in the 600 Block of East Broad Street.
The victim suffered a through and through gunshot wound. It is considered non life-threatening. He was transported to MUMC.
The suspect who ran from police Richard HALSTON, 22, was charged with obstruction, a parole violation warrant, possession of a firearm by convicted felon, and theft by receiving. An additional charge of Aggravated Assault W/ intent to Rob was added today against Richard Halston. This incident is still under investigation.
