SAVANNAH, GA (August 23, 2016): The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded to a fatal accident at approximately 2 a.m., Aug. 23, at the intersection of Abercorn and the Truman Parkway.
Derek Morgan, 24, and Christopher Collins, 28, were both killed at the scene.
Investigators say Morgan was driving a 2000 Chevy S-10 pickup and Collins was his passenger. Morgan was traveling east on Abercorn at a high rate of speed alongside Javaris Williams, who was driving a 2012 Chevy Malibu. Both vehicles ran a red light at the intersection of Abercorn and Truman, as a Michael Gaither exited the Parkway in a 1999 Lincoln Navigator.
Preliminary investigation shows Morgan impacted with Gaither’s vehicle first causing Gaither to spin and sending Morgan toward the west bound lanes of Abercorn. Almost immediately after this impact Gaither collided with Williams’ vehicle, which was just behind Morgan.
Gaither was transported to St. Joseph’s Medical Center for treatment. Williams did not report any injuries.
The crash is under investigation by the Major Accident Investigation Team.
