SAVANNAH, GA (October 3, 2014): Traffic will be rerouted in several areas tonight and Saturday as the city begins its Oktoberfest celebration and Savannah State University holds its Homecoming parade.
Oktoberfest activities largely will be confined to River Street and access routes to it beginning tonight at 8 p.m. and all day Saturday, but traffic is expected to be heavy throughout the downtown area. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police will have an increased presence.
SSU’s parade begins at 9 a.m., but streets will be cleared as early as 6 a.m. to prepare for it.
Resident parking will be allowed on only one side in the staging area on side streets between East Broad and Price streets from East Hall to East Liberty streets beginning at 6 a.m.
The parade route itself will be closed to traffic beginning at 8:45 a.m. The parade begins on Broad Street at Liberty and travels to Broughton Street, west to MLK Jr. Boulevard and then south to West Hall before it disbands. Congestion is expected to be very heavy until after 1 p.m.
Details of the route can be found on the SCMPD website at: https://savannahpd.org/ssu-homecoming-parade/.
In each case, police ask drivers to plan their routes and use caution and patience during these events.
