SAVANNAH, GA (June 11, 2015): Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) officers from the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department are investigating a two-vehicle collision and the death of one driver after his vehicle submerged in a pond this afternoon.
Daniel R. Sims, 68, was pulled from his submerged vehicle by two Southside Fire and Emergency Services firefighters who witnessed the collision. He was revived after going into cardiac arrest and transported to Memorial University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
He had been driving an Acura SUV north on Green Island Drive near the Landings subdivision about 4:10 p.m. when the SUV failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a Land Rover traveling west on Diamond Causeway. The impact redirected the Acura to the northwest where it submerged into a pond.
Jessica Howell, 26, driver of the Land Rover, was transported to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Members of the SCMPD Dive Team searched the submerged Acura and the pond to assure that no one else had been in the Acura at the time of the crash.
MAIT continues to investigate the accident.
