SAVANNAH, GA (June 3, 2016): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Violent Crimes detectives are still investigating the fatal shooting of Brian Heckman, 57, on June 2 in the Thomas Square Neighborhood. Heckman’s neighbor Kurt Meyers, 34, has been charged with the murder.
Investigators determined Meyers and Heckman lived next door to each other in a rooming house within the 2400 block of Abercorn Street. Meyers is charged with shooting Heckman at that address.
Meyer’s relatives told detectives that Meyers may have a history as a mental health consumer, sustaining himself through certain disability benefits. The motive in this shooting remains under investigation, but appears to relate to Meyers’ perceptions.
SCMPD’ SWAT team safely evacuated other occupants of the building. SWAT then made contact with Meyers who did not seem to recognize the need to exit the building and surrender. SWAT deployed gas, causing him to surrender.
