SAVANNAH, GA (February 25, 2015): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police are investigating the crash of a sedan this morning that was attempting to flee from a police car that was not in pursuit.
A Southside Precinct Patrol officer had seen the black 2004 Pontiac GTO speeding and initially attempted a traffic stop, but discontinued the action when the car sped away.
A short time later, the officer saw a flash from a transformer and noticed lights flicker before finding the GTO had knocked down a power pole and overturned on a lawn, interrupting power to much of the area.
Steven E. Owens, 26, of the 100 block of West 76st Street, was charged with obstruction by fleeing, possession of marijuana and eight traffic offenses after the crash on Mohawk Street near Middleground Road. He was arrested after officers approaching the wreckage saw him exit the vehicle and run into a wooded area.
Taishai Branson, 24, of an East 56th Street address, was removed from the wreckage and transported for treatment of injuries that appeared to be non-life threatening.
Packages of marijuana were found in the wreckage.
